{Shopping} 9 Must-Have Coats

 photo MustHaveCoats_zps2d3ff45f.jpg
Depending on where you live and how big a role winter-wear plays in your life, you'll know that January is the best time of year to pick up a new coat (or two). Sale season is in full swing, which means stocking up on cozy outerwear like it's going out of style... So to speak, of course. Right now I'm into fleshy tones, prints and basic blacks in the coat department, so when French Connection asked me to round up my favourite coats from their current (and reduced) collection, I couldn't help but narrow down my focus to those three categories. I find that pastel or camel outerwear generally take an outfit to the next level, while printed coats shine with bright pops of colour or complimentary prints. I save black coats for particularly crazy outfit days to minimize the amount of puzzled stares I generally get, or when a girl just needs a little something something to give the illusion of a slimmer silhouette... And considering that most of us just ate our weight in holiday treats, this last option is looking mighty appealing right about now.

Prints Charming: Electric Checked Oversized Boucle Coat | Checked Bunny Coat | Penelope Pop Checked Coat

{Shopping} Knitwear 101

 photo knitwear_zps733bf09d.jpg

Now that the holidays have wrapped up (where did the time go?!) and boxing week is officially upon us, I figure a little retail therapy is just the ticket for getting through a nasty case of PCD (or Post Christmas Depression). And since it's cold outside, a fully-fortified sweater arsenal is always a good idea. That's why I've become something of a hoarder when it comes to knitwear this year, finding any excuse to bring a new sweater home with me... Pied Piper style.

So if you find your jumper-stash running low, I say invest in a couple loose-fitting numbers rendered in black or neutrals first (like these ones from French Connection), adding colour, print and embellishment as you go. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither should your wardrobe.

{Christmas Week} Treat Yo' Self

Naughty as it may seem, I like to subscribe to the treat yo' self philosophy this time of year. Think about it: You're running around trying to get gifts, everywhere you go is mayhem (ick) and you're basically perma-stressed between social and work obligations. So to keep morale high as the mercury (and my patience) drops, a little retail therapy can go a long, long way.

 photo IMG_0411copy_zps5b6387ce.jpg

I'll let you in on a little shopping secret of mine, but only if you promise not to go all credit-card happy and make me regret telling you about this, ok? Here it is: I'm obsessed with Vaunte. It's my favourite online haunt, and for those unfamiliar with the site, it's basically what you would get if Vogue and Ebay were to have a baby for reals. You can shop the closets of all these different designer/stylist/socialite-types for some seriously deep discounts, avoiding all that pesky buyer's remorse I get from my Shopbop addiction. Long story short, I lusted after this floral bag all last year but couldn't justify the cost for a cotton bag. So when it popped up on Vaunte for half the price, I snagged that puppy without a second thought Merry Christmas to me.

photo IMG_0418copy_zpsc0dfc122.jpg Suddenly all the annoying parts of the holiday season seem bearable again Seeeeee? Treat yo' self. xx

{Shopping Guide} Holiday Wishlist

 photo SouthgateCentreHolidayWishlist_zps622060eb.jpg
The holidays can be a stressful time of year, but treating yourself a little now and then can go a long way in terms of keeping morale high amidst all the craziness. So when Southgate Centre asked me to make a holiday wishlist from their roster of retailers, it was a therapeutic process to say the least. Now I don't expect anyone to rush out and buy me an MK bag or iPad Air (you're officially off the hook, Mr. AiF), but it sure is fun to dream nonetheless. And in keeping with the whole 'treat yo' self' philosophy I seem to prescribe to, don't be surprised if you see a fun leopard clutch or bright red dress creep into posts during the weeks to come... Just saying.

Be sure to visit southgatecentre.com to make a holiday wishlist of your own one lucky winner will walk away with their entire wishlist, up to $2,500! How's that for treating yourself?

{Wardrobe Wednesday} Lips Rings

 photo SaveOrSplurgeLipsRings_zpsc8170b92.jpg
This Wardrobe Wednesday features a save or splurge component which doesn't quite apply to me because let's face it I had to go be all greedy and buy both. To be fair, I ordered the CC Skye version online before I knew Forever 21 carried a fun, Lulu Frost-inspired version for a fraction of the price. Woe is me. Regardless, I felt the need to have both. Because really, after shelling out over 100 big ones for a trend item, what's five more.

The verdict? Despite the aforementioned trend (read: fleeting) nature of the design, I actually much prefer the CC Skye version. It's smaller, more streamlined and far more flattering to wear, translating to 20x more use than it's inexpensive counterpart... So on a cost-per-wear basis, the CC Skye version is actually a way better deal, right? Oh come on, humour me.

In other news, congrats to Kirsten Butler for winning a copy of Alexa Chung's new book, "It" Enjoy, girl!

{Shopping} Three To Love

For those of us who view shopping as a competitive sport (you know who you are), there's no greater thrill than getting lost in a great online store... Sometimes that involves pajamas and ice cream in bed (who said that?), while other times it means copious amounts of links sent to your bff in the middle of the night for a second option. I recently got lost on the Harrods website, discovering new-to-me labels and old, drool-inducing favourites. Right off the bat, I fell in love with their Pinko, McQ Alexander McQueen and Just Cavalli offerings, dreaming up outfits (as one does) and building quite the wish list (don't tell Mr. AiF!). Here are a few of my favourite combos Let the shopping begin!

"Seeding" a Travel Wardrobe

Top and cardigan: Anthropologie; Pants: Karen Kane (a gift from Sal);
Sandals: Ara; Bag: East

The outfit pictured here is very typical of what I've been wearing all summer, and came about because of a process I call "seeding," which I'll explain in this post. I developed this process as a way to assemble a travel wardrobe and manage on-the-road purchases, and it has worked remarkably well.

The strategy is easy and straightforward. Before I left for my last trip, I "seeded" my wardrobe with a few new items, shown below. I chose items that seemed very current in terms of color and style, and these formed the basis of my travel wardrobe.

The items I chose worked well with one another, as well as with the pieces I packed from my existing wardrobe. They're also all made of comfortable, washable fabrics that pack easily and resist wrinkling. Below are a few of my travel outfits that used both seeded and existing garments. Right off the bat the new items made my travel wardrobe more interesting because none of these outfits had ever been worn at home.

In addition to the items shown above, I also packed one pair of dark wash jeans, 2 pairs of sandals, one pair of boots, 2 other lightweight knit tops, and a few basic layering pieces such as long-sleeved tees and tank tops. Perhaps you're thinking, "White pants for traveling?" Yep. More on that later.

Now comes the fun part: shopping on the road. The items I seeded my wardrobe with, being the season's current styles and colors, had two important advantages:

  1. They worked well with many things I found in the shops abroad. Let's face it, fashion has become pretty homogeneous in the Western world these days, and the things I picked up in Baden-Baden, Edinburgh and Paris could easily have come from any of the shops I frequent in San Francisco. That's fine; they still have the sentimental value of being purchased while traveling, and I know they won't end up as closet orphans since they integrate well with other favorites.
  2. Since they were the new and exciting pieces in my wardrobe, they made me gravitate towards other items in the same color family that I found along the way. Not only that, but since I was often wearing one or more of my new items while shopping, I had them there to try on with all my potential purchases.
Here are the things I picked up on the road:

As you can see, my entire shopping haul was made up of navy, teal and white (or off-white). All of these items were worn multiple times during the trip, and many were still workable even as I traveled into colder climates and needed to layer.  By the end of my trip I had slowly infused enough new items into the mix that I never tired of my travel wardrobe, and since I packed light to begin with, my suitcase had the space to accommodate the additional clothes.

The outfits shown below were all born on the trip, and have since been worn to work and around town. By seeding my wardrobe with a few new things and building upon those as I traveled, I built a fresh, versatile summer wardrobe with plenty of items that can transition into fall and winter.

Now, about those white pants: yes, they seem deeply impractical for a travel wardrobe because even the smallest spill will cause them to need laundering, but I managed to be extra careful with them and it was well worth it. The reason is that although it was hot and summery in Istanbul, the rest of the trip took me to colder climates where my sundresses were rendered completely useless. The white pants were a great way to look summery no matter what the weather was doing; in Istanbul I wore them with tanks and sandals, and in Iceland I tucked them into boots and wore them with layers and a jacket. So go ahead, pack those white pants for your next summer trip; just make sure you stay away from red wine and marinara sauce.

Without Hesitation

This great little structured bag came my way via MyHabit, which is Amazon's flash sale site, similar to Gilt. When the bag originally appeared in a sale, I wasn't quick enough to get one before it was gone (my big complaint with MyHabit is that they have very few of each item, so browsing the sales often leads to disappointment when all the best things are sold out within 5 minutes). However, I put my name on the wait list and one became available about a month later, so I snagged it without hesitation. A sure case of non-buyer's remorse averted!

Tailored

I hope all my friends in the US are having a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and are enjoying some time off. I certainly planned my vacation well, with just a couple of days to be back at work before having a nice break again. After 3 weeks away it's good to ease back into work.

I'm excited to share this dress at last because it was such an incredible score. I found it at the designer outlet Opitz back in September when I spent the weekend with Sal, and it was in perfect condition except for the zipper being broken. A trip to the tailor later, and I had a new designer dress for a fraction of the cost. And isn't it a beauty? I adore the mix of menswear fabrics, the geometric panels, and the tailored fit.

In other news, I've been promoted! I'm now an Associate Director, which is really exciting. I've been working very hard on a high importance project for several months now, so it's gratifying to see the reward from it. Can you believe it's been more than a year since I started my new job? I can hardly call it new anymore, but thankfully I'm still loving it as much as I did when I first started there.

{Details} Retail Therapy...

Photobucket Photobucket

Sheer boredom, coupled with my love of online shopping, led to a little splurge-fest recently... And since I worked from home yesterday, I was around when Mr. Postman came by to deliver the goods. No, not like that pervs, I'm talking about this adorable bag and these hot heels! Now truth be told, my dream animal-embossed bag is a little more Burberry than ASOS, but hey, I do what I can. And how cute are these ShoeMint pumps? My feet are officially ready to parrrtay.

Happy weekending, friends! xx

{Life Log} Confessions of a Shopaholic...

Photobucket

My shopping ban has come and gone, and difficult as it was at times, I learned a thing or two along the way... So I guess in retrospect it was kind of a good thing Kind of. No but seriously, I'm really glad I took a break long enough to appreciate my pre-existing wardrobe and all the things I can do with less.

The biggest thing I learned during my month of no shopping was that I spend waaaay too much money on clothes. And the more I buy, the more I seem to want to buy. It's a strange, vicious cycle, and half the time I don't even wear some of the things that come home with me... What's up with that? Seriously, the top I wore in this post was bought over five years ago and it had never been worn It still had its tags!

Now don't get me wrong, I still love shopping as much as the next girl, I just don't want to mindlessly buy things because I think I should... That's just not healthy. Because in the age-old words of Carrie Bradshaw herself, "Why are we should-ing all over ourselves?" I think homegirl was on to something.

So here's to taking a step back and learning to love what we have... I know I will. xx

Neglected

For this outfit I hauled out a couple of items that have been long neglected in my wardrobe. I've had both the pants and the boots for ages, but for some reason they just don't get used that much. The boots are tough for me because they have a long pointy toe, something I'm not terribly comfortable with because I feel like it makes my size 9 feet look gargantuan. However, under pants they work really well because that same pointy toe elongates my legs, especially when the boots match the pants as well as they do here.

The top is another purchase from my Minnesota trip. My hotel was right down the street from Saks Off Fifth, where I spent a couple of hours one morning snapping up a few great deals. Between the discounted prices, an extra discount for being on the mailing list, and no sales tax on clothes, I cleaned up.

Closet Strategy

I feel like lately I've narrowed down the items in my wardrobe that I actually wear to what amounts to a capsule wardrobe. I've been tempted to go through and ruthlessly purge my closet's contents, but I suspect this is probably just a phase and if I'm too hasty in my zeal for closet efficiency (I am a Virgo, after all), I'll only end up on a massive shopping spree at some point in the near future. So here are these green pants again, and this tunic that you've recently seen, and again with the shoes. But hey, if you're looking for ways to style the same pieces over and over, you've come to the right place.

Part of the problem is that I really haven't done much serious shopping since I started my new(ish) job, so I don't have the constant influx of new items that cause me to feel experimental about my clothes. Part of it is that commuting by public transportation or on foot is a whole different ballgame than jumping in the car, walking to the office from the parking lot, and spending most of the day at my desk. And part of it is that I'm really enjoying the simplicity of paring down to a more manageable wardrobe and sticking to my favorites that I know are winners. I've also gained a lot of knowledge over the last several years about what the real winners are, and how to dress creatively while still flattering my figure and achieving the kind of vibe I'm going for. Am I evolving, or am I just getting lazy?

What's your closet strategy? Do you prefer a vast array of choices, or a more carefully curated and smaller collection?

Accident

I accidentally bought these pants on the way home from work the other week. OK, it wasn't exactly an accident, but it felt that way. I popped into the Joe's Jeans shop near Union Square because I saw something that caught my eye as a possible birthday present for my friend Laura, and came face to face with a wall of skinny jeans in just about every color you can think of. Olive jeans had been on my shopping list for some time, and well, the rest is history. These fit beautifully and are incredibly comfortable. The real miracle is that I didn't come home with more than one color.

Pretty Pastels...

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Today's outfit is brought to you by H&M, that wonderful neighbourhood mass retailer who always knows what I need... And in this case, what I needed happened to be a mint green dress. The moment I saw it I just knew it had to be mine, and couldn't wait to pair it with this blazer that I bought there last year... Can you say pastel heaven? Sigh.

Happy Tuesday, love bugs! xx

Night Life...

To say that this has been an action-packed week would be a huge understatement, what with meetings, coffee dates, articles and brainstorming sessions taking up much of my time... But fret not, mon petites it's not all work and no play for this girl! In fact, I was lucky enough to have been invited to a super-fun blogger night at local boutique-extraordinaire Bamboo Ballroom, as well as to the J.Crew launch party at the West Edmonton Mall... So much fun!

So without further ado, here's a look at the festivities as seen through Instagram... First up, Bamboo Ballroom!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

The evening consisted of some fab bloggers getting together for some tasty treats, necklace-making with Bang Bang Bijoux, pampering (check out Kassie getting her makeup did!), and of course, shopping! Leopard print jeans, anyone?

Next up was the J.Crew launch party... Bloggers, media peeps and other coolio's congregated to the West Edmonton Mall to celebrate the store's much anticipated opening with hor d'oeuvres, vino and a little shopping. The gents were gifted dapper umbrellas on their way out (a timely gift considering it poured buckets all week), while the ladies recieved adorable leather clutches... Thanks, J.Crew!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And that's it! I hope you enjoyed this bombardment of photos, and as always, thank you for reading! Wishing you all a lovely weekend... xx
